Football fans have taken a swipe at Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy following his dismal showing against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal tie

Mendy and his Chelsea teammates walked into the Champions League quarterfinal game against the Los Blancos on the back of a shocking home defeat against Brentford.

And the Blues were on the hunt for a confident restoring game against the Spanish giants at Stamford Bridge but what ensued after 90 minutes of action will rather do more harm to the confidence of the Blues than restore it.

A quickfire brace from red-hot Karim Benzema in the first half put Madrid in pole position to secure a win in the first instalment of the doubleheader. But German forward Kai Havertz halved the deficit before the break to put the cat among the pigeons. However, a rare howler from Senegalese shot-stopper Edouard Mendy aided Benzema to grab his hattrick as the away side inflicted back-to-back defeats on the Blues.

It was the second time in as many games in the Champions League a goalkeeper of high repute capitulated in front of Benzema after Donnaruma also gifted the French forward a goal in Madrid’s round-of-16 comeback win over Paris Saint-Germain. Despite Mendy’s bad day at the office Chelsea still has a fighting chance in the second leg which will be staged at the famous Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
