Babe Ruth hit his 500th career home run playing for the New York Yankees in Cleveland’s League Park on Aug. 11, 1929. Indians pitcher Willis Hudlin threw a high fastball which “left home plate much higher and ten times faster than it arrived. It soared over the right-field fence near the foul line, and was the first run of the afternoon,” according to a New York Times article. 

Ruth allegedly told the park’s security chief he was going to hit his 500th home run before the game that day and that he wanted the kid who found the ball to bring it back. Jake Geiser, 46, found the ball and was escorted to the Yankees’ dugout, where he exchanged the home run ball for two baseballs signed by Ruth and a $20 bill.
