AFCON Qualifiers: Ghana Humbles Sao Tome and Principe 3-1

The Ghana Black Stars who had already qualified for Cameroon 2021 with their last 1-1 draw against South Africa managed to score 3 goals in their game with Sao Tome and Principe.

The Black Stara registered their first goal courtesy Nicholas Opoku12 minutes into the first half. Jordan Pierre Ayew made it 2 from the penalty spot in the 31st minute. Abdul Rahman Baba made it three with his first.

Sao Tome and Principe have considered 16 goals and scored 2 in their AFCON qualifiers. The Stars who were playing from their Ohene Gyan Sports stadium in Accra netted two goals in the first half.

A defensive blunder by the Ghanaian goalkeeper gifted a consolation goal to Sao Tome and Principe scored by Iniesta, their top scorer who is currently on 6 goals.

Ghana was expected to score more and use local players called up for the qualifiers. Gladson Awaku came in the 46 minutes of the game to replace Osman Bukari.

Gladson Awaku was the best local player introduced into the game in the early minutes of the second half.


Kwasi Okyere Wriedt came in for Abdul Rahman Babain in the 70th minute. Then came the Medeama Midfield General Justice Blay in the 78th minute for Mubarak Wakaso

In the 79th minute of the match, the manager of the side, C.K. Akonor brought on Kwame Poku who plies his football trade in Germany, and he Asante Kotoko lad.

The coach has given the local players an opportunity, and they have vindicated themselves.

Pundits of the game have called on the manager to build a better team that gives very good local players the chance to prove their worth. Sports analysts in Ghana have called on the Ghana Football Association to give the coach a free hand to operate.

Ghana is eying the AFCON trophy that has eluded them since they last won it in 1982.
