Senegal went to the #CAFAwards2022 and got their hands on 5 enviable CAF Awards on the night. Senegal became champions of Africa in 2021 after they beat Egypt in the finals on penalties.
Having won the Men’s National Championship (AFCON) in 2021 for the first time in their history, they have made more history at this year’s CAF Awards 2022 as they won a record 5 top awards.

- 2022 Men’s National Team of the Year – Senegal (Teranga Lions)
The Men’s National Team of the Year went to Senegal. Senegal won the 2021 AFCON after their left-winger, Sadio Mané scored the winning goal in a 4-2 penalty shoot-out. Senegal’s ‘Teranga Lions’ beat Egypt’s ‘The Pharaohs’ to emerge as the winner of the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) football tournament and are now Africa National Male Team of the year.
- The 2022 Men’s Young Player of the Year – Pape Matar Sarr
On the night, The Men’s Young Player of the Year (MEN) went to Pape Matar Sarr of Senegal.
CAF Men’s Player of the Year – Sadio Mané
Sadio Mané was crowned the CAF Men’s Player of the Year (for the second time) at the 29th edition of the #CAFAwards2022 in Rabat, Morocco. Sadio Mané beat the two other top contenders Mo Salah and fellow countryman Edouard Mendy to pick his second CAF Men’s Player of the Year award after leading Senegal to lift the CAF trophy for the first time.
Sadio Mané has now been in the top three shortlist of the African Player of the Year awards 5 times (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022) and won twice. Mo Salah has 4 top three nominations (2017, 2018, 2019, 2022) and two wins.
Ahead of the 2022/2023 league season, the former Liverpool forward signed a new deal with German champions Bayern Munich.

Speaking at the post press conference after the awards, Sadio Mané said the AFCON remained his most special trophy won as a player. “I grew up watching only the national team. The AFCON remains the most special trophy to me.” He said.
Men’s Coach of the Year – Aliou Cisse
Aliou Cisse, the head coach of the 2021 AFCON winning national team, was named the African Coach of the year after he led the team to win its first ever AFCON trophy and beat Egypt, Africa’s most successful men’s football team.
